Been a long time, but now we are back with another exciting interview. This time we have a great honor to have Nick Cook with us, the creator of the fantastic fan-made Star Trek show, Intrepid. I had the privilege to meet him over the Destination Star Trek Convention last year in Birmingham and we had a great chat. I am very honored he took the time to take part for this interview. We talked about the early days when he discovered Star Trek, the series impact on his life and Intrepid as well.
What is your first memory about Star Trek? How long have you been a fan of the show?
How has your life changed since you discovered Star Trek?
Well I guess Star Trek has a lot to do with where I am in life. Most of my closest friends are people I met through Star Trek, and more recently Star Trek fan films. I met my wife through Star Trek, and by extension became a father. Star Trek also lead me to explore my creative side through writing and fan films. How I see the world, and my views were certainly in some way shaped by watching Star Trek as a child (and an adult).
Favorite series, movie, episode, captain, villain?
To be honest, it changes over time. I’d probably still rate Next Generation as my favourite show, but it’s a very close thing between Next Gen, DS9 and TOS. But I like all the shows. Honestly, it’s like trying to pick your favourite child.
Favourite movie. I’m sort of loath to admit it since I’ve not really loved the first two Abrams movies, but Star Trek Beyond might actually be my current favourite. It’s probably a close thing between Beyond and First Contact. I also really like Search for Spock.
Favourite episode? Probably Who Watches the Watchers. Wonderful story, beautifully acted. But it’s a close call between that and Darmok, for all the same reasons. Tin Man’s another that I really love, because I think we can all relate to the character of Tam Elbrun in one way or another.
Best villain? Honestly, that’s not a question I’ve ever given much thought to. Probably the Romulan Commander from Balance of Terror, because he had depth and wasn’t actually a villain.
Any memorable encounter with a Star Trek actor/actress you met?
I really enjoyed chatting to Don Marshall who played Lieutenant Boma at the Vegas Convention back in 2013. I had a pretty memorable exchange with Marina Sirtis at a convention in Glasgow about 20 years ago. I love her dry, sarcastic wit, probably because it’s so much like my own. Scott Bakula, who I only met very briefly in an autograph queue was great. So friendly and down to Earth.
What made you create Star Trek Intrepid? What was the main inspiration for the series?
Insanity! Really, we had no clue what we were doing or what we were getting into. If I knew what I knew now….. Well actually I’d still do it, just a lot differently. To be honest, the main inspirations were a desire to play in that sandbox ourselves, but also having watched Starship Exeter The Savage Empire, and Hidden Frontier, that was the thing that told us we could do it. Other than that, I was probably creatively inspired by Deep Space 9, Stargate: SG1 and Buffy. I’d always been interested in seeing more of the ordinary people in the Star Trek universe and I wanted to do something a little different, with a slightly quirkier, less perfect captain and crew. Maybe I should have just made something like The Orville. :)
As a Trekkie/Trekker I assume you own a few memorabilia. Which one of them you the most proud of?
My absolute favorite bit of memorabilia is a screen-used Nemesis Starfleet uniform. And it fits me, which is awesome.
Apart from Star Trek which other sci-fi shows that you like?
There’s so many. I don’t get to keep up with things as much as I used to, but I always liked the Stargate shows. It’s not exactly sci fi, but I really enjoy the various CW superhero shows such as Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl. The original Twilight Zone is still la favourite, and I was thrilled when they brought the X Files back with Mulder and Scully. Then there’s Agents of SHIELD, the new Twin Peaks, the Marvel Netflix shows, the list goes on. I really want to watch The Expanse but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’m looking forward to Discovery.
