For me almost every morning is the same. I wake up, make my bed, switch on the laptop, and then I check if there's any Star Trek news. Usually I go to Trekcore as they have lot's of fresh information about what's happening with the Trek family, not like startrek.com which has become a bit slow in the recent years. As always, they had the first real information about Star Trek Discovery. A new interview with Bryan Fuller came out recently. He talked about how the series is progressing and what's in his mind about the story and the look of the show... but now I have some concern.
He's Looking For a "Star Trek-ish" Look...
Now he finally revealed the information that Discovery will take place about 10 years before the Original Series, just before Kirk and Spock. This means there's still a chance to see them on the show... just sayin'. ;) So I have no issue at all with this, although I thought we were going to explore the time period between The Undiscovered Country and The Next Generation. I believe that's the era that still has lots of potential and unexplored aspects. I totally agree with that decision, as with Enterprise and TOS, we are talking about a big time gap that would have a lot of potential. Personally, I wanted to see something else rather than a pre-TOS era with the reimagined look. Don't get me wrong, I do love TOS, but these days we have too much going on with that show, like Star Trek Beyond, the 50th anniversary... etc. We are sitting on a ride where there's nothing else, just TOS, but there are other series in the future what we would love to see... My concern with his idea for the new show is him trying to reimagine the aliens. Well, Enterprise "introduced" the aliens - Klingons, Andorians, Ferengies, Borg... etc. - that we were all familiar with from previous series. If he were to recreate those solid elements, there wouldn't be continuity any more... unless it were a dream, a temporal disease, or something that can temporarily alter the look of the universe that we are familiar with. I hope if they do such, I hope the explanation will be "logical".
There will be a female lead, but not from the beginning...
If I understood him right the female lead will called "Number One" and that person will pay tribute to Mayel Roddenberry's Number One from the Original Series. That all a noble plan, I would love to see that happens. :) She was a wonderful women! Althought this new character will be introduced later on the show. Well, in this case I'm sure it will be something else going on with the story. This lady will have a significant role in the series and maybe it's really a big surprise for all of us, so they want something what will lead to her during the first episodes. I know the name of the ship is Discovery, but maybe it's really the time to discover something far more interesting... ;)
Sounds like Star Trek...
Mr Fuller also shared his opinion about the music and as a big fan of the instrumental storytelling I'm very happy to hear as he want to pay homage to the classic notes. The music always a very important part of every series. The opening credits were different in many cases during the show. TOS had a unique start with the music. It was gorgeous by that time. TNG had a similar approach at the beginning and then they grown up to be a bit more serious what represented through DS9 and Voyager. I personally really enjoy listening all the music from all the different series - yes, even from Enterprise; I'm one of the very few... ;) - and I really hope he's going to get someone who is familiar with the legacy of Star Trek music.
My final thoughts...
Well, however I'm a bit affraid about the new look now as they want to reimagine things in the prime universe I still try to be optimistic about the show. We've seen nothing yet and as he said there will be new details around October. If the show going to debut in January they will have very little time to do everything... but maybe we all know very little and they are far more ahead then we think. Who knows!? It will be different and also somewhat new. Hopefully with the "specialist" onboard - Shatner, Dorn, Spiner, Ryan and Bakula - the show will be traditional in a way and after the first episode we can say "Yes, this is it!"
I would love to know what do you think about the whole series and what's going about and around Discovery. Feel free to share your opinion and in the comment section below.
