My Destination Star Trek Europe Experience

15/10/2016

As you probably noticed I’ve done several videos in this subject, but there’s still some gaps which I had no chance to cover in the videos. Or maybe I simply forgotten about... that can happen too. J I’m sure I do have a solid audience though who rather read my occasional nonsense than watching my face on YouTube, so here I am. ;) Writing was always a precious hobby of mine. I like literature and creating stories. I meant to do this little review earlier, but as many of us in had a lot do. I’m a full time designer and after all this is just a hobby. I do love to do this and as you probably noticed, just now I revamped the design of the website as well. It’s been something as a designer, and “artist” I was very keen about. So on this note let’s jump in to this. Set some cold drinks and enjoy the following bits and pieces.

Meeting the Actors

I have to admit, the focus point here for me at least to meet the actors who I’ve only seen on the screen, and also the people who love the show just as like me. :) I think I can safely say I did have a good weekend. If you’ve seen my videos you probably noticed I’ve got photo’s with Armin Shimmerman, Jeffrey Combs, Vaugh Armstrong, Walter Koenig and last but not least with the super wonderful George Takei! Meeting them was extraordinary. I had a chance to talk with a few actors over their place when they were signing autographs. They are all very lovely and friendly. I remember it was a bit silly as I went there telling them I just wanted to say “hello” and just thank them about what they’ve done over the series. The hope what they gave us, the laugh that they shared with us. Many of them happened to be a very welcoming and of course very humble about this. I didn’t go for autographs this time as now I started to realize the pictures has more meaning to me. Remembering a moment what I’ve spent with that person front of the camera is priceless, a timeless moment in time, something what I will be able to remember when I will be old and grumpy! :D Just kidding. ;) So going to talk with them without buying anything was a more personal experience. :)

Meeting with Fans

It’s sound a bit hars, but meeting Star Trek fans here in London, it’s a bit of a challenge. :) I remember a while back then, I had a visit to Forbidden Planet where I asked the staff if they know anyone, or a club where I can meet people with similar enthusiasm about Star Trek. Despite all the questions and my initial research, it looked a very tough job.  All those people who love Star Trek, and yet they are hiding. :) But two years ago I happened to attend the third Destination Convention, and now the fourth one and I’ve met several people whom shared their love about this wonderful world. I know myself, I have an attachment to the show that is hard to describe with single words. It means a lot to me, a LOT! It helped me through different phases in my life, it guided me when I needed the most, and gave me a lot of hope as humanity can be better then as it is now. Surprisingly the majority of these people who I met had the same thought about it. All these different people and all those different words in the same sense: hope, joy, friendship, laugh, curiosity. These are the main factors what connects us to this series. :) I’m glad I had to meet some very nice individuals over the 2 days. If you, Dear Reader, happened to be the one whom I had the fortune to meet I thank you again! :)

The Star Trek Rat Pack

As I’ve only attended the event at Saturday and Sunday I happened to be present in the Rat Pack concert which I really enjoyed. This literally was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. I loved the James Darren and Tim Russ concert two years ago and I was super excited to attend the Rat Pack this time. Casey, Armin, Max, Vaughn, and Jeffrey… 5 wonderful person whom I loved in the show in their character as well. I might not be the only person who thinks the same, but the relationship between me and the series is sort of more like a second family experience. I have my parents, brothers and grandparents, friends as every one of us, don’t worry. :) But when I happened to watch any of the series any time, basically I went to my second home. Somewhere, where I love to be all the time. Somewhere, where I feel myself home away home. That’s one of the many ways how I can describe my affection to this show in general. :) Seeing these people on the stage having fun, singing songs about Star Trek in a funny way, just something that a Trekker/Trekkie can’t even ask for. Witnessing this wonderful friendship what they had between them, the chemistry what was present… something what you have to experience. It’s like a WOW moment. :) It was literally a WOW moment. I’m glad I saw them and of course I almost forgot to mention the super delightful Chase Masterson who just happened to be playing before them. She was just perfectly adorable, sweet and a total delight! :)

The Venue

This is the point where I have to say I have mixed feelings… ok, I was a bit disappointed. The fact that we had a big gap between the last and this convention, made everyone wanted this soo desperately. In Europe we don’t really have that many opportunity to gather together in an event like Destination Star Trek and just have fun celebrating our beloved TV show. There’s Fed Con though in Germany, but even being here in London sometimes it’s hard to make a move there. I’m glad though they arranged the event for the 50th anniversary. The other hand the place was not really used to its full potentials. The area in NEC was enormous, but exactly the same size as the Excel one two years ago. In comparison to the previous convention this had the original Enterprise Bridge set along with the Klingon Bridge which were cool. I try to be more positive about the venue, but to be honest it’s a bit hard. They had a massive place with small engagement involved. The merchant area was disappointing as half of them were selling cakes and biscuits. The others had small amount of merchandising for sale and of course in a horrible price. The Klingon Zone was a bit more like a lunch place for hungry Tribbles… no offence towards them though. :) The autograph section was very close to the exit and very much together with the 2 bridge set. The museum was just a single wall where the walking fan only could see some spacesuits and uniforms. I remember the last one and it had some very nice pieces in display and it was over all more engaging. They planned and it was advertised on the website, a Gaming Zone… that seems to be vanished from the event. Wonder what happened in that section… :/ The “50 Years, 50 Artist” exhibit was very pleasant though. I enjoyed the different sort of art pieces and sculptures. I saw a Borg cube made out of used Hot Wheels cars and even the famous photo from Leonard Nimoy who was posing with his car as a 3D sculpture. So at least there were interesting pieces.

My Final Thoughts

Despite the lack of the merchant section, the week museum walk and the very under organised area, I had a good time. Thanks to the fantastic people who I had the fortune to meet and see. If I would give a score for the whole event I would give 3 out of 5 which isn’t that bad after all. The fact, as I have a big smile every time when I check the pictures with the fans and actors makes me feel really happy. :) Overall it was a good weekend, not phenomenal, but a good weekend. And now thinking about the merchant area, maybe it was meant to be like this… they saved us spending too much gold pressed latinum this time. ;) LLAP _\\//

I know, I know... it's been a while. As as before, work and youtube took over my writing schedule. I don't promise anything, but I try to get back in track this month. I will be a little bit hard as I have a few things coming up. I'm working on Inktober, also a holiday is coming along at the second part fo the month. I'm quie busy as it turned out. :) Also this weekend I'm attending the Destination Star Trek Europe in Birmingham, so I won't really be around, but surely there will be a few video next week about my experience of the weekend. :)

It's hard to tell at the moment when everything will come back to normal. I think i'm kind of overscheduled myself. :) The writing and drawing will take place as it's been before. The videos are getting more attention now in youtube, so I try to focus on that as well. Also I have work to do... interesting time, indeed. :) I do would like to thank everyone again who visits the website and care about what I do. :) It feels really good and I'm more then happy. :) I'll be back soon as my inner geek is getting hungry for a more exciting journey... ;)
