It's been a while since Star Trek Beyond came out back in July and we were all amazed about the movie. My initial reaction was great after seeing it, despite the fact of the "Sabotage" that I'm still digesting! :) It was such a big difference between the previous two in terms of plot, theme and respect to the original timeline. I decided to buy the DVD and I've just got it recently, so I thought it's time to catch up with the movie and see if my feelings are still the same or not. :)
An Episodic Adventure with References
So, before I start this part make sure you watch the movie first as there's some spoliers coming soon. Not going into two much details, but I warned you. :) The movie starts with a usual mission for the crew of the Enterprise. It's been 3 years of the 5 years mission and as Captain Kirk said "Everything starts to feel more episodic now." Funny enough watching the movie it did feel like an episode from the Original Series. The characters were more together, the scene was more homely - the less lens flare definitely helped :) - and just the over all feel of the whole movie was "familiar." There was many reference in the movie towards to pay an homage to the original series. Kirk said at the beginning of the movie "it's the 966 days of our 5 year mission." 1966 when the series aired at the first time... so this is a nice touch. Scotty even mentioned regarding the Franklin the "Giant Green Hand" that also happened to be in the Original Series. Checkov and his historical correctness... wow. :D "Scotch was invented by a litle old lady in Russia!" That just made me smile. The banter between Spock and Bones was simply amazing and Kirk was more Kirk then before. :)
The visual effects obviously important but not as important as the stoy and characters. The 3 things I would like to adress here: Enterprise, Franklin and Yorktown. The Enterprise looked amazing! Seriously, the ship in Beyond is a magnificent looking spacecraft. The pulled back nacelles and the thinner pilons made her looking gracefully in the big screen. The overall feel of the interious was also just warmer than before. No lens flares, and the light was dimmed down a bit and I think that certainly helped enjoying the movie more. :) I'm just sad they did destroy the ship when finally it looked amazing. :(
Than we had the USS Franklin, that supposed to be a NX01 class looking ship... There's been debates about the ship itself back then as its rather fits to the timeline or not. I think we can totally fit her in as we don't really now much about what happeed between the NX01 and TOS. And after all it was a MACO ship, so I think I'm totally OK with the ship. The Franklin definitely a nice construction, would be nice to have one in my shelf and hopefully I can get one for christmas. :) A little touch on the Space Station Yorktown... as Doctor McCoy sad "It's a giant snowball in space that's about to crack." While I can see the point of our good old Doctor, the station itself is a very magnificent looking one. Quite advanced in he own way, literally a never seen before. I believe my beloved DS9 could look somewhat different and week looking after seeing this snowball, the so called "giant monstrosity."
It's Still Amazing
Over all I'm really happy with the movie. I know some of you didn't really like it. I know one of my friend finally got satisfied over the fact as the JJ Enterprise got destroyed... I was just sad it happened when the ship just looked the best. :( The movie was amazing, the characters were true to their predecessors, but keeping themselves open for new posibilities. After all we are in an alternative timeline. If you accept this, the JJ films, but specially Beyond it's a really great movie.
I'm not really a critic, but apart from the "Sabotage" I believe the film from me deserves a 9/10 score. Great references for a hard core Trekkie/Trekker/Fan with aaction, humor, and sadness... the loss of Anton and Leonard surely something that present on the movie. :( But we have to be positive and see it in a way as Beyond is a celebration to their lives and for a brighter future that we have to work our way towards.
