There are countless of characters in Star Trek. Some makes appearances in every episode, some pops in occasionally, and some you always seen in the background... Trek would not be the same without them. Today, on what would have been her 89th birthday, I would like to take a minute to remember my ultimate-all-time-favourite character in Trek history, Lwaxana Troi, Nurse Chapel, M'Ress, the ships computer... Majel Barrett Roddenberry.
Majel played a handful of characters in Star Trek, but my absolute favourite has to be Lwaxana Tro who has always fascinated me. She is that outgoing oddball who always sees life from its lighter and brighter side. She was the person who you can always go for a smile in a rainy day. For me, her presence on screen was always somewhat supernatural and elevating. She has never been a 2 dimensional character and I loved those moments when we seen her vulnerable side as well, that brought her closer to my heart at least. Her sassy quotes and the childish balance she maintained with Jean-Luc melts my heart every time.
I have to admit though, it took me a bit of time to realise that Majel was the voice of the Computer itself... and she was perfect. That voice, that tone really provided a sense of comfort and safety aboard every series, no matter that it was TNG, DS9 or Voyager, she was there and present, keeping everything together. A calming, informative and sometimes sassy computer voice...
She gave the voice for M'Ress as well, the Caitaan from the Animated Series. She gave a bit of playfulness to that character and a touch of elegance that is, lets face it, every cat creature has in real life. That being said, for some reason I have never really been a fan of Nurse Chapel. I mean, she was certainly a major character who had a significant role in the show, but for some reason she never resonated with me as much. Number One though... she was wicked. Powerful, empowering and a kickass woman onboard the Enterprise, I just wish we could have seen more of that character.
Aside being all the characters above, Majel for me always will be the person who cared for the fans deeply. I have never had a fortune to meet her in real life, sadly I have born too late - not to mention in a different continent - to meet her in any convention. However the documentaries I've seen with her, the speeches I have watched, she does felt like a person I would have had a good chat with and could have brought me a smile on my face. She always looked welcoming, cheerful and extremely uplifting... she was one of a kind.
The truth is, I just love her deeply through her characters. As Lwaxana she did give me a very important lesson about life that is "Life's true gift is the capacity to enjoy enjoyment!" Even in the darkest times there are some great things around us, we just have to find it and appreciate it, even if it's just a cheeky smile from Lwaxana. :) Happy Birthday Mrs Troi. _\\//
