The news hit the audience recently as in Star Trek Beyond there will be a gay character. What nobody really expected is the person who will be this character is Sulu. When I've the news I thought "well done, they made an other approach in this subject and George Takei will be touched as they honoring him as the activist of the LGBT community." Beig closeted in Hollywood, George Takei had to face with a difficult time back then, but in a long run the people changed and they accepted his sexuality. In Star Trek, well specifically in TNG and DS9 the issue was touched a few time. Think about the episode called The Outcast, where the J'naii race basically neutral in terms of sexuality. Now Riker comes and one of the scientist named Soren became friends. Soren has a feeling about Riker and because "she" embraces the female and male gender she's facing with a big dilemma of being outcasted... not giving away the episode, watch it. ;)

The fact they made Sulu gay in the new movie although didn't really make George Takei happy. He's been approached before by John Cho and Simon Pegg as they wanted to do this with his character and he clearly stated although Sulu didn't really have any intimate relationship through the series and the feature movies Gene Roddenberry imagined the character straight. Honouring Star Trek and the man who created the series never the less more important if it comes to a big milestone.

I totally respect George Takei. He's brilliant, funny and an incredible human being. I hope they will bring him back somehow to the new series, I would love to see him back. :) In this new move athough I don't think it necesseraly has to be a big fuss about this. Fist of all this is an alternative universe. Second of all the foundation of Star Trek was always "infinity diversity in infinite combinations" and I think it's brilliant. Being a long time Star Trek fan I had an issue accepting the new "Kelvin Movies", but this quote - what actually came from the Vulcan race, how logical ;) - made me rethink this. I believe being open minded, being more human is essential when it comes to this franchise.  No one had the problem when Spock and Uhura played as a couple in the new movies as they never been really together in the original series nor the movies. In fact I think Uhura and Scotty became a little closer in Star Trek 5 - The Final Frontier... surprisingly no one talked about that difference between the new and the original.

The same-sex issue was represented in the series before. Just think about Jadzia Dax and Lenara Khan not to mention the Mirror version of Ezri and Kira... they are part of the original canon and I can't see the problem why it can't represented in the alternative timeline. And it is really a problem these days? It really has to be a big issue? I'm sure they didn't focus on this in the whole movie as they had other things to take care of. I would say be open minded and wait till the movie comes out. I'm super excited because this movie looks the best so far after the previous two and it will be already hard to watch because of the recent loss of Anton Yelchin. Personally I think the title of this movie tells a lot. Going Beyond was always part of Star Trek. Talking about racism, war, sexuality, interracial relationships and science... that's all part of the exploration, to being human. 50 years of boldy going where no man has gone before certainly makes sense in this case...
